September is National Head Lice Prevention Month

by Tracey on September 24, 2009

In USA, September is National Head Lice Prevention Month, which was created in 1985 to heighten the awareness for parents, teachers and children of head lice prevention and safe treatment.

In Australia, children are also preparing to go back to school or kindergarten. It’s likely they will make new friends and laugh and play and roll around together. The perfect opportunity for head lice to transfer from head to head!

Head lice prevention should be part of every child’s normal routine throughout the year,” said Deborah Altschuler, President and Founder of The National Pediculosis Association (NPA). “Head lice is not a September crisis. Regular screening takes only minutes and can mitigate a host of unnecessary, uncomfortable and unsafe problems down the road.”

As parents and children head back to school and kindergarten and day-care centres, the NPA strongly recommends the early screening for head lice and nits with safe and healthy tools to keep children nit free.

YAY!!! Lice prevention month! Lice are literally taking over our elementary schools, and its crazy that there is no way to really stop these things and prevent them for good from even infecting anyone. But, thats great that we can focus on prevention for a month, and hopefully we can someday find a way to keep them from even coming into our schools in the 1st place.

I agree that early screening (as recommended by the NPA) is critical! The sooner you realize you are in fact affected by them, the sooner you can 1) get rid of them 2) keep them from infecting more of your family and friends and other school children.

Thanks for the great reminder on why prevention is important!
