Like most illnesses and afflictions that spread through classrooms during the schoolyear, headlice infestation has its own set of myths surrounding it. As soon as a child in your son or daughter’s class contracts lice, or you realize someone in your own home has a head full of nits, you may panic. Take a deep breath and educate yourself before taking any drastic measures. Some of the myths associated with lice infestation are much worse than the actual problem.
Myth #1: If I get headlice, I will have to shave my head.
How many times have you heard this one? And how many parents have used it as a warning to keep their children from sharing combs and hair accessories with their classmates? The truth is the days of shaving one’s head to get rid of lice are long gone. What you will need to do is comb through your hair carefully with a fine-tooth nit comb and apply all-natural product that rid the hair of adult lice and nits.
Myth #2: Headlice can jump from head to head.
While lice are mobile creatures, they have no ability to fly or jump. Just sitting at your desk next to someone with lice will not put you in danger. Your hair must come into contact with something has lice on it. This means sharing hats, hairbrushes, hairbands, and pillows can put you at risk. However, sitting next to someone who is infested will not put you in harm’s way.
So many wonder why having a child at school with lice is such a big deal. If each child is stationed at their desk, lice will not be jumping from head to head. The problem is on the playground when children are playing in close proximity to one another, in the coat room where hats and hoods are touching, and for younger children, after naptime when their sleeping mats and pillows are stacked together. If you determine your child has headlice, be sure to notify their classroom teacher so other parents can take the proper precautions.
Myth #3: Powerful chemicals are needed to rid my hair of lice.
Not only untrue, believing it could cause you or your child a great deal of danger. Headlice are tough, but they are unable to stand up to the appropriate natural products designed to treat an infestation. If you or your child contracts lice, do not panic and apply a head full of toxic shampoo. There are other options that will keep you safe and rid your hair of lice.
